Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than either we desire or deserve: pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Scripture Readings for our Worship

Proverbs 9.1-6

Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars.
She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table.  She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town,
‘You that are simple, turn in here!’

To those without sense she says,
‘Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.
Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight.’

This is the word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

Psalm 34.9-14

Refrain:  O taste and see that the Lord is gracious.

9 Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones, for those who fear him lack nothing.

10  Lions may lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.

Refrain: O taste and see that the Lord is gracious.

11  Come, my children, and listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12  Who is there who delights in life  and longs for days to enjoy good things?

13  Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from lying words.

14  Turn from evil and do good;

seek peace and pursue it

Refrain:  O taste and see that the Lord is gracious.

Ephesians 5.15-20

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is the word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 6.51-58

Glory to you, O Lord.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven.  Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.

This is the Gospel of the Lord   Praise to you, O Christ.

Prayer after Communion:

God of all mercy, in this eucharist you have set aside our sins and given us your healing: grant that we who are made whole in Christ may bring that healing to this broken world, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord..  Amen

Please remember in your prayers:

Those who are sick:   Youngblood McCray, Thomas Platt, Yan Connell, David Foster, Susanna Michaelis, Lucas Calvert, Ron Holmes, Ann Boss, Geoffrey Heywood, Sheila Parsons, Christine McCrann, Diana Wickens, Steve Wilkinson, Richard Jones, Diana Doren-Dean – that God’s healing, wholeness and peace are with them.

Those preparing for marriage:

In our parish, we ask God to bless and provide for:

Thought for the Week

If the Church can’t see its vocation at a time like this, we might as well give up.  There is no point the Church having unemployed love, and now is the time to really voice it and show it.         The Very Rev’d Mark Oakley, Dean of Southwark, on recent rioting

Godly Play! 4pm on the third Sunday of each month

Godly Play is a way of sharing Scripture stories with children, and helping them wonder about faith, using a Montessori approach, with crafts and a snack to share too. It’s free, and especially suitable for primary age children (accompanied by an adult please). The next gathering is today, 18th August, at 4pm. Everyone welcome!

Children’s Church

… is an important part of our church life, and one of the ways children learn more about Christian faith. We’re looking for helpers for Children’s Church for the new term. If you can offer one Sunday morning each a month (or more if possible) please have a word with Rev’d Carol.  An Enhanced DBS check will be arranged.

Meeting up

The clergy are available for pastoral support and spiritual direction, please don’t hesitate to be in in contact.  If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time or is seriously ill, please let us know as soon as possible, to arrange prayers, home communion, a hospital visit, or anointing of the sick.

If you would like us to pray for you, or for someone you know, for any reason, please email your request to prayer@christchurchlancaster.org.uk or text the Prayer Chain on 07980 351855. Please ask the person’s permission if you’d like them included in the weekly notices.

September Service – from the 8th September

To help us meet the needs of our children and families better, there will be a new shape to some of the 6pm evening services. These will include a Godly Play story, and time for quiet reflection. On the second Sunday of the month, it will be Evening Prayer, and on the fourth Sunday a family-friendly eucharist. We hope you can join us, and would love to hear your thoughts.
