Serving the city’s homeless people since 1992
For the last 29 years, Christ Church has run a Night Shelter for homeless people each winter, accommodating up to 25 people per night. We are the only non-referral Shelter in the North-West. Lancaster City Council (01524 582257, or out of hours: 01524 67099) are the first point of contact for anyone who is homeless and requires accommodation.
From Monday 1st November, the Shelter will be open from 9.30pm every evening of the week. The last admission is at 10.30pm. Led by our co-ordinators and volunteers, we provide a warm welcome, hot drinks and food, warm, dry clothing, and a safe space for guests to sleep. If required, a phone is available for those who need help to contact housing services. The Shelter will run until the 23rd December, when we break for Christmas. (Alternative provision will then be available via LDHAS on Edward Street). The season re-starts on Monday 3rd January, running until the 25th March.
We ask that guests do not bring pets into the church grounds, and do not drink or take drugs on site. Smoking is only permitted outside. Guests who break the rules will be asked to leave, and if rules are repeatedly broken, the Shelter will close for a short period.
We are extremely grateful for all the generous donations of food, clothing and finances which we have received from the local community and from the Francis C Scott Trust, National Lottery Community Fund, and the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund. The operation of the shelter depends on the kindness and generosity of volunteers who give their time to ensure that homeless people have access to warmth and shelter throughout the coldest months of the year.
We always need new volunteers, and if you feel that you could help for as little as an hour per week or per fortnight it would be much appreciated. If you would like more details about the Shelter, or you wish to support us in whatever way, please contact the Night Shelter Coordinators on 07547 717060, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
