Actions for May 2024

5th May

Plantlife encourages us to increase the number of wildflowers appearing in our lawn. Please follow their ‘No Mow May’ advice and allow nature to provide vital food for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

12th May

Between 13th to 17th May, Waterwise aims to raise awareness and promote ways in which we can save water. By incorporating small water-saving habits into our daily routines we can collectively make a BIG impact on water conservation. See https://www.waterwise,org/save-water/

19th May

Did you know that World Bee Day is celebrated on 20th May each year during the month when there is the greatest need for pollination? Bees are increasingly endangered and rely on human intervention and support. Learn more about them and help by planting bee friendly shrubs or flowers in your garden.

26th May

Most of us know that we should avoid the purchase of peat based compost to protect this incredibly valuable habitat and help prevent the release of greenhouse gases. Despite UK Government’s ban on sales of peat based compost as yet there is no legislation to back it up and even worse no ban on commercial growers. This means that farmed mushrooms, leafy salads and houseplants are usually grown in peat compost. Look at  Hidden Peat, a new campaign launched by The Wildlife Trusts to learn what action you can take.
