God of glory, by the raising of your Son you have broken the chains of death and hell: fill your Church with faith and hope; for a new day has dawned and the way to life stands open in our Saviour Jesus Christ.. Amen.

Scripture Readings for our Worship

Jeremiah 31.1-6

At that time, says the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.  Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.  Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall take your tambourines, and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit. For there shall be a day when sentinels will call in the hill country of Ephraim: ‘Come, let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.’

This is the word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God.

Psalm 118.1-2,14-24*

Refrain:    I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

1    O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever.

2    Let Israel now proclaim,

‘His mercy endures for ever.’

Refrain:

14  The Lord is my strength and my song,  and he has become my salvation.

15  Joyful shouts of salvation

sound from the tents of the righteous:

16  ‘The right hand of the Lord does mighty deeds; the right hand of the Lord raises up;

the right hand of the Lord does mighty deeds.’

17  I shall not die, but live

and declare the works of the Lord.

18  The Lord has punished me sorely, but he has not given me over to death.

Refrain:

19  Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter and give thanks to the Lord.

20  This is the gate of the Lord;

the righteous shall enter through it.

21  I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me and have become my salvation.

22  The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

23  This is the Lord’s doing,

and it is marvellous in our eyes.

24  This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Refrain:

Acts 10.34-43

Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’

This is the word of the Lord.    Thanks be to God.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew (28:1-10).

Glory to you, O Lord

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, “He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.” This is my message for you.’ So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion:

God of Life, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection have delivered us from the power of our enemy: grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen

Readings and Prayers for the 16th April (2nd Sunday of Easter)

Prayer for the Week.

Risen Christ, for whom no door is locked, no entrance barred:

open the doors of our hearts,

that we may seek the good of others

and walk the joyful road of sacrifice and peace,

to the praise of God the Father.   Amen.

Acts 2.14a,22-32

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.

‘You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know— this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him,
“I saw the Lord always before me,
   for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken;
therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
   moreover, my flesh will live in hope.
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
   or let your Holy One experience corruption.
You have made known to me the ways of life;
   you will make me full of gladness with your presence.”

‘Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying,
“He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.”
This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses.

This is the word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

Psalm 16

Refrain: The Lord is at my right hand; I shall not fall.

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you have I taken refuge; I have said to the Lord, ‘You are my lord, all my good depends on you.’

2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble in heart.

3 Though the idols are legion that many run after, their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,

neither make mention of their names upon my lips.

4 The Lord himself is my portion and my cup; in your hands alone is my fortune.

5 My share has fallen in a fair land; indeed, I have a goodly heritage.

Refrain: The Lord is at my right hand; I shall not fall.

6 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel, and in the night watches he instructs my heart.

7 I have set the Lord always before me; he is at my right hand; I shall not fall.

8 Wherefore my heart is glad and my spirit rejoices; my flesh also shall rest secure.

9 For you will not abandon my soul to Death, nor suffer your faithful one to see the Pit.

10 You will show me the path of life; in your presence is the fullness of joy and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Refrain: The Lord is at my right hand; I shall not fall.

1 Peter 1.3-9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

This is the word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (20.19-31).

Glory to you, O Lord.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

This is the Gospel of the Lord    Praise to you, O Christ.

Thought for the Week

On [Easter] Sunday, in churches … all over the world, people will gather in the darkness, light a small fire, kindle a flame and declare that this Jesus who died on the cross is risen and that he is the light of the world. Hope itself is rising up.  This hope can change the world for good. It can inspire us to be better. It can break down walls. It can roll away stones.                                                         Archbishop Stephen Cottrell
