Scripture Readings for our Worship today:
Genesis 18.1-10a
The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, ‘My lord, if I find favour with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.’ So they said, ‘Do as you have said.’ And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, ‘Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes.’ Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
They said to him, ‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ And he said, ‘There, in the tent.’ Then one said, ‘I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son.’ And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him.

Colossians 1.15-28
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him— provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel.
I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

Glory to you, O Lord
Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Grant, O Lord, we beseech you, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance, that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Children’s Church
… is an important part of our church life, and one of the ways children learn more about Christian faith. We’re looking for helpers for Children’s Church for the new term. If you can offer one Sunday morning each a month (or more if possible) please have a word with Innes. An Enhanced DBS check will be arranged. Please note that all children need to be accompanied to church by a parent/guardian.
Godly Play! 4pm on the third Sunday of each month
Godly Play shares Scripture stories with children, and helping them wonder about faith, using a Montessori approach, with crafts and a snack to share too. It’s free, and especially suitable for primary age children (accompanied by an adult please). The next gathering is today, 20th July, at 4pm. Everyone welcome!
Pathfinders & Voyagers – summer holiday clubs – Innes will run activities for Pathfinders (age 4+ Tuesdays) and Voyagers (age 8+ Thursdays) each week during the summer holidays (10am to 12 noon). All youngsters welcome! Flyers available.

The clergy are available for pastoral support and spiritual direction, please don’t hesitate to be in in contact. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time or is seriously ill, please let us know as soon as possible, to arrange prayers, home communion, a hospital visit, or anointing of the sick.

Eco-Group Thought/Action for the Week
If you are struggling to avoid plastic altogether don’t give up. Decide what permanent changes you can make to remove plastic from your life.
Recycling at Christ Church – from the Eco-Group
On the first Sunday of the month, we collect medical blister packs and personal care items such as soft plastic tubes (e.g. for hand cream), wet wipe packaging and used make-up such as lipsticks, eyeshadow and mascara. Please look carefully at the information provided on and close to the collection boxes to ensure that you only bring in what can now be recycled volunteers. No bottle tops or dental products, please.
Bible Course – Sundays
Following on from the Sponsored Scripture Read, we will be running The Bible Course, a fantastic way to learn more about the Bible’s context and history, as well as how to understand God’s words today. Meeting in the Hall after the 10:30 service for a lively discussion – everyone is welcome!
Taizé Eucharist
Join us for a beautiful service of music, prayers and songs from the Taizé community in France. The next service is on the 7th September, with musicians rehearsing from 4.30pm.
Save the Date! Pet Blessing service 27th July
Join us on Sunday 27th July for our Pet Blessing service at 4pm. All creatures great and small welcome – on a lead or in a container please. If you’re bringing anything larger than a Great Dane – please let Rev’d Carol know. There will be a collection of tinned/packet pet food and used blankets and towels for Wolfwood. Please invite friends and neighbours too!
Save the Date! Christ Church Bug Hunt
We’re going on a bug-hunt – I’m not scared! Join friends from the North Lancashire Wildlife Group at 2pm on Sunday 3rd August in the Hall and Garden to look for all the creatures which make a home in our church grounds. Families welcome – children must be accompanied.
140 Years of the Gregson Centre
Celebrating 140 years since plans were laid for the building of the Gregson Centre on Moor Gate, and we’d like you to help if you know anything about the building. The Gregson has been relied on through wars, recessions and good times. If you ever came here, or if you remember anything you were told about the building and its surroundings in the past, we’d love to hear about it to contribute to the history we’re building. A Pint of Theology – 12th August
On the second Tuesday of the month, at 7:30pm, everyone is welcome in the Olive Bar at the Gregson for an hour’s discussion (with or without a pint) on aspects of Christian theology and its place in our contemporary world. Please share with others who might be interested, and contact Innes if you’d like to know more.

Fairtrade Church
We are now a Fairtrade Church. as a sign of our care for creation, and our support for better working practices for farmers. If you buy items for church events, please check for the Fairtrade logo first.
PCC
Our PCC met on Wednesday 2nd July. We discussed plans for a new Hall kitchen, the installation of fibre broadband, plans for music at Church, and much more. Please do talk to your PCC reps about any aspect of life at Christ Church, and pray for the PCC in its work this year. You might want to use the following prayer
Lord God, Together with you by our side, we can bring growth to our Church. Send your Holy Spirit to give us good planning, wise actions, joy in worship and our welcome, the right words when we speak to others. Help our Church grow in numbers, in Spiritual commitment to you, and in service to our local community, through Christ our Lord. Amen
Community at Christ Church:
Monthly Lunch and Open Church – 17th August
On one Sunday of each month there is usually a free soup, bread and cheese (or vegan alternative) lunch, and the church will be open during the afternoon. This month, our open lunch will take the form of the annual parish barbecue for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so please come along and bring friends, family, neighbours. If you can help serve, wash-up, etc, thank you!
Allergies at Christ Church

Craft Group
…. meets most Tuesdays at 11.30am in the Hall. Everyone welcome – bring your own project, or share in one of the others on the go! No prior experience needed. The group is hoping to increase its frequency – watch this space!
Book Group
The church book group’s meets on the first Friday of the month (the next is on 1st August) at 4 pm in the church hall. Anyone who enjoys reading and discussion is very welcome to join us. You can just turn up on the day, speak to Joyce, or send an email to joycelynch1946@gmail.com
Gardening Group
Our friendly gardening group meets on the first Friday of each month (1st August) between 12noon at 2pm to keep our church garden looking lovely. New members always welcome – whether for all or part of the time. If you can, please bring gloves and secateurs.

Christ Church are looking for a Director of Music, who will conduct our choir, play the organ/keyboard for services, and help grow our musical presence in the local community. If this might be you, or someone you know – please speak to Rev’d Carol.
Choir Church
Our recent service in school was a great success, with 40 people attending! Our children’s choir sounded fantastic. Thank you for your prayers and support! The next service is on the 17th October at 3.15pm in school – please save the date.

Giggle (or Groan) of the week – suggestions welcome!
There was once a little worm who lived in an apple and heard some rumours that there would be a flood to wipe out all life. He was scared until he heard that there was a man named Noah who was building a massive ark to. save all the animals. So the worm gets in his little apple and starts rolling it. He rolls through deserts and grasslands, mountains and valleys, over rivers and cities alike, and. after many weeks of travel he finally saw the ark in the distance. He rolled up to Noah in his little apple, and ran right into his ankle to get his attention. Noah looked down at the worm in the apple and picked him up, asking him, “What would you like, friend?” To which the worm replied “I heard there was going to be a flood and I wanted a. spot on your boat.” But Noah just nodded his head and said ,”Sorry, little guy, we only take animals in pears, not apples.”
