6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Psalm 27: 8-9
‘Come,’ my heart says, ‘seek his face!’
    Your face, LORD, do I seek.
     Do not hide your face from me.
Do not turn your servant away in anger,
    you who have been my help.
Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
    O God of my salvation!

The volunteer is tired, and a bit overwhelmed. She wonders what, if anything, she is achieving. Then, at the end of a long day, after she has done what she thinks is a small kindness, someone says ‘thank you’ with tears in their eyes.

Lord, show us your face
in every human being;
and help us to know that whatever we do
for our brothers and sisters,
we do for you.
