4. Jesus meets his mother

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Luke 2:34-35
Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

He arrived only weeks ago, fifteen years old. Now he sits in his smart new school uniform in an English classroom surrounded by people speaking a language he does not understand. He thinks how proud his mother would be, but he doesn’t know where she is.

Lord, we thank you for our mothers,
and all who have nurtured us in our lives.
We pray for all mothers and fathers
whose souls are pierced
through separation from their children,
by distance or death;
and for children who travel alone.
